Stage 4
San Vicenzo Cespón – Isorna (19 km)
The fourth stage begins by surrounding the estuary of the Beluso River to head, in the middle of fertile riverside vegetation, to the town of Taragoña, with its slender temple and rectory house. The pilgrim then continues along the shore and, crossing the mouth of the River Te, reaches the remains of the medieval castle of A Lúa. The literary village of Rianxo is just a stone's throw away. The birthplace of Castelao, Manuel Antonio, Dieste and other notable writers preserves a beautiful old town in which the church of Santa Columba and the Martelo manor stand out.
The pilgrim leaves Rianxo looking for the mouth of the Ulla River, which merges its waters into the Arosana estuary. He continues through the picturesque towns of Abuín and Leiro (with an outstanding parish temple) to head inland towards the parish of Isorna. The parish center stands out for its notable temple and two crosses that rise nearby. Isorna was the place of origin of one of the Compostela archbishops, Álvaro Núñez de Isorna (1370-1448). In this quiet environment the fourth stage ends.
The Legend of the Castle
The Castelo da Lúa was built by the knights of the Knights Templar, who were involved in numerous conflicts with the nobles of the area. In one of these confrontations, the Templars took as prisoner a beautiful maiden, daughter of the feudal lord who had been humiliated by defeat. In the same prison of the castle was one of the defeated knights, who was recovering from his wounds after defending the maiden, with whom he was deeply in love. She reciprocated this feeling, so once cured, and with the help of a messenger, the two lovers escaped from the castle through some passageways to board a boat along the estuary. Suddenly, the sentinels noticed his flight, and they pierced the chest of the brave knight with arrows, who fell dead into the sea.
Faced with such misfortune, the maiden threw herself into the waters after him, in despair. The next day, the waves carried the bodies of the lovers, still embracing, to the beach and the Templar chief buried them in one of the interior towers of the castle. According to legend, from then on, every moonlit night, its rays illuminate the lovers' grave.
