Stage 3
Igrexa de Santa Mª A Antiga – San Vicenzo Cespón (31 km)
The third day begins by touring the stately lands of Caramiñal, flanking the Pazo that houses the Valle-Inclán Museum, visiting the temple of Santa María la Antigua and reaching the center of Santiago do Deán.
The pilgrim then leaves Pobra do Caramiñal behind and, crossing the Pedras River, continues, passing the Pazo da Mercede, along the coast until reaching the town of Escarabote. From there the road turns away from the coast and borders the bounded land of one of the great noble houses in the area: the Pazo de Goián. Immediately, the pilgrim reaches Boiro (its church of Santa Baia was consecrated by Diego Gelmírez).
The second part of the stage returns the walker to the shore of the estuary, who, along Barraña beach, continues towards the picturesque fishing village of Cabo de Cruz. At Carragueiros beach the road turns sharply and heads to Abanqueiro through a beautiful agricultural environment. From Abanqueiro the route always continues close to the sea, visiting two interesting archaeological sites: the petroglyphs of Laxe da Cabra and the impressive double fort of O Neixón, located at one end of the coast. The route ends a little later, at the parish church of San Vicenzo de Cespon.
Escarabote / Santiago de Lampón Church
The church of Santiago de Lampón, a new reference to the Apostle in a probable enclave of the Camino Real. Built on a 12th century Romanesque chapel, the building has a Latin cross plan, with a central nave divided into three sections. The image of Santiago Apóstol stands out on the façade, and on the right side there is a pilgrim shell. On the altar we find other Jacobean symbols such as the scallop, the saber, the flag and the book of Santiago Matamoros.
Pazo de Goiáns
Shortly after we will arrive at the Pazo Torre de Goiáns, one of the most important in Barbanza along with that of Xunqueiras. It is an L-shaped building, built in granite ashlar and with a roof at various heights, made with tiles from the country. Originally from the 16th century, it was remodeled in 1760. It is believed that the tower, square and with a balustrade at the top, was demolished during the Irmandiñas Revolts and later restored. The manor is accessed via the internal staircase, which ascends through vaulted rooms, adorned with the heraldry of the different lineages that inhabited the manor throughout history. In addition to the main building, others intended for agricultural uses are preserved, as well as a chapel, dovecotes, a stone fountain in the shape of a mermaid and a pier.
In its heyday, the domains of this manor extended to the islands at the entrance to the Arousa estuary.
Church of San Vicente de Cespon
As usual, we finish the day in a very special temple: the Church of San Vicente de Cespon, the oldest in Boiro. The building, with a Latin cross plan and a single nave, covered by a barrel vault, was subject to numerous modifications over the centuries, which is why we find different styles in it: Romanesque (on the main façade), Gothic , baroque and neoclassical. It is believed that it was erected on a Roman necropolis. The bell tower is located on the side facing north, and draws attention to the cross of Celtic tradition at its head. Inside, the 16th century Gothic baldachin stands out with scenes of the Apostles and an important relic: the tibia of Saint Vincent.
