The Legend
According to Jacobean tradition, after the death of the Apostle James the Greater in the city of Jerusalem, they collected his body and set out in search of an appropriate place to bury him.
In this boat they crossed the Mediterranean and reached the Atlantic coast, finally docking in a port at the ends of the earth.
His tomb remained forgotten for centuries, until a local hermit discovered the exact location guided by the glow of the stars. This discovery would be the seed of one of the most flourishing cities of medieval Europe, a new holy city and a beautiful Cathedral, which would attract faithful from all over the world.
The Way
The Way of Santiago of Barbanza "A Orixe" is based on the story of the Apostle's arrival in Galicia sailing through the waters of the Arosa estuary and the Ulla river.
Various evidence, such as the existence of several pilgrim hospitals, the proliferation of images of Santiago and more than two hundred landmarks related to the Jacobean tradition (cruceiros, churches, convents...) reveal the existence of an ancient path during the medieval period that accompanied by land the Apostle's journey through the waters of our estuary.
This 135 km path begins at the Corrubedo lighthouse and through six stages that run through the municipalities of Ribeira, A Pobra do Caramiñal, Boiro, Rianxo, Dodro and Padrón it reaches Iria Flavia, where it connects with the Portuguese path to end in the Plaza del Obradoiro, at the foot of the Cathedral.
The Association of the Way of Santiago "A Orixe" carried out intense research and enhancement work for years to recover this Way of Santiago that formerly crossed the Barbanza.
