The fifth stage of the road goes down to the picturesque village of Quintáns, located on the calm banks of the Ulla. From there the Camino A Orixe traces the final stretch of the Ulla River to the very place where, according to tradition, the apostolic boat arrived with the remains of the apostle. The first point of importance, on the other bank of the river, are the west towers, which once protected the entrance to the estuary and access by sea to the Land of Santiago. The road continues up the shore towards Bexo, with its island, and the brañas de laíño. The pilgrim now walks through the lands of the municipality of Dodro, an agricultural space fertilized by the alluvium carried by the Ulla.

Along the way you will find interesting examples of popular architecture such as the set of Imo granaries, or the Arco de Castro granary along with monumental temples such as San Xián de Laíño or Santa María de Dodro. Already close to Padrón, the place of arrival of the apostolic boat, the baroque manor of Lestrove, a place of solace and rest for the Compostela archbishops, will weaken and will leave on its left the sanctuary of Santiaguiño do Monte, so linked to the Jacobean tradition. The end of the stage is reached on the banks of the Sar, a place where under the altar of the church of Santiago, the "pedrón" where the disciples arrived with the body of Santiago Zebedee is preserved.

Imo granaries

In the village of Imo we will have the opportunity to see an impressive set of granaries, one of the most emblematic Galician buildings, dating back to the 18th century. These are 11 granaries, of the so-called Mahía type, with a rectangular floor plan with stone slabs and continuous tornarratos, erected on transversal walls that act as supports, and clear spaces with wooden balusters separated by stone columns.

Lestrobe Palace

This renowned building, originally from the 16th century, was for centuries the recreational residence of Compostela prelates. The palace underwent numerous renovations over the years. Archbishop Felipe Fernández Vallejo built a new chapel connected internally to the pazo and raised the patio fountain, crowned by a pilgrim Saint James. Towards the southwest, above seven interior stone arches, rises a balcony from which there is an incomparable view of the brañas and pastures of Lestrobe. At the top of the building's façade the coat of arms of the prelate Vallejo is represented, who also commissioned the works on the main staircase and the altarpieces of the chapel. The manor passed into private hands, and currently operates as a hotel.

Census

The fifth day of our route ends in Padrón, a city that has a special connection with the Camino de Santiago. In fact, it is the first place that appears mentioned in the Jacobean legend. In this city, located at the confluence between the Ulla and Sar rivers, different variants of the Camino converge. In addition to this capital point, the historic center of Padrón presents other attractions that are worth discovering, such as the Convento do Carme, with its viewpoint overlooking the entire city and the stone fountain where an image of the traslatio is engraved.

Likewise, we can visit the House Museum of Rosalía de Castro, the most recognized Galician writer, or taste the famous Herbón peppers.

Once there, we are obliged to visit the famous “Pedrón”, an ancient Roman milestone dedicated to the god Neptune that, according to tradition, marks the place where the boat that transported the remains of the Apostle moored when it arrived in Galicia. Currently, this “pedrón” is located under the main altar of the Church of Santiago.
