Stage 2
Capela da Guía – Igrexa de Santa María a Antiga (26 km)
The second, longer stage starts from the Chapel of A Guía, a place of great devotion for people of the sea, crossing the town of Carreira. It skirts the Vixán Lagoon (freshwater) and continues to the fishing town of Aguiño. Just before reaching this point, the enigmatic Phoenician Port is preserved on Covasa beach. We leave Aguiño and its port behind, crossing several evocative sandy beaches, especially Castro Beach. The pilgrim walks along the shore of what are now calmer waters: he enters the Arousa estuary.
Upon reaching the place of Castiñeiras, the path moves away from the coast and passes through a higher area, up to the A Garita viewpoint, which offers magnificent views of the estuary. Shortly after, the pilgrim descends until he reaches the shore again and continues to the town center of Ribeira. This city embraces an important fishing port that is well worth a visit, although the route goes through the old town, continues through Plaza Compostela and leaves the monumental temple of Santa Eugenia on your left. The Camino continues to the town of Palmeira (100 kilometers from Compostela) and, through the Cabío sandy area, it reaches Xobre (where there was a Franciscan convent that welcomed pilgrims). Enter A Pobra (where there were three hospitalillos) and reach the temple of Santa María la Antigua, in O Caramiñal, the end of the stage.
Church of Sta. María A Antiga do Caramiñal
Church promoted by the Xunqueiras lordship in the 16th century, and completed almost two centuries later, it consists of a large rectangular central nave, a main chapel and a sacristy. The apse is Renaissance, with gargoyles and buttresses, while the altarpieces are in the Baroque style.
On the façade, the door is flanked by two pilasters that continue in the triangular pediment, in whose tympanum appears the central figure of the Virgin and the apostles Peter and Paul.
Church of Santiago do Dean
Before leaving the center of A Pobra, we must visit the church and the cross of Santiago de Deán, a marine Gothic style temple, original from the 14th and 15th centuries, which hides numerous Jacobean vestiges. At the entrance, we found a huge scallop shell that served as a baptismal font, and at the main altar, a Pilgrim Apostle as the patron saint of the parish. The church has details in various styles, such as plateresque, baroque and neoclassical. It consists of a single nave with eight small chapels, among which the Alba chapel stands out, decorated with different architectural elements and figures carved in granite. The oldest part of the building is the apse, with a fan vault, adorned on the outside with a sculpture of the Apostle contemplating the sea. In the patio of a house adjacent to the church atrium we can see the Deán cross, from the 18th century.
