Physical training
Gradual Training
Start preparing with enough time before the date on which you will start the Camino. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your walks and exercises to avoid injuries.
Training Walks
Go on regular hikes with your hiking gear and the backpack you plan to take along the way. This will help you get used to the weight and avoid any uncomfortable surprises during the actual ride.
Cardio workout
To the best of your ability, you could include cardiovascular activities such as running, swimming or cycling in your training routine. This will improve your resistance and lung capacity.
Muscle Strengthening
It incorporates muscle strengthening exercises, especially for legs, glutes and back. Squats, lunges and balance exercises are useful for improving stability during walking.
Flexibility and Stretches
It is important that you spend time stretching before and after each workout. Maintaining good flexibility will reduce the risk of possible muscle injuries.
Increase Distance
As you get closer to your departure date, gradually increase the distance of your training walks to adapt your body to the longer days on the trail.
Incorporates Varied Terrain
If possible, train on different types of terrain, including hills and descents, so you will be better prepared for the various challenges you may encounter during the Camino.
Rest and Recovery
It is important that you listen to your body and not push yourself too hard. Rest is a fundamental point for muscle recovery and avoiding exhaustion during the tour.
Hydration and Nutrition
Stay well hydrated during your workouts and be sure to bring nutritious snacks with you to replenish your energy. Try different foods to find out which ones suit you best during the walk.
Practice with the Backpack
Take training walks with the backpack that you will carry during the Camino. Adjust the straps and distribute the weight evenly to avoid discomfort and friction.
Appropriate Footwear
Wear the footwear you plan to wear on the Camino during your workouts. Make sure they fit well and are comfortable for long distances.
Positive mentality
Maintain a positive and realistic attitude. The Camino de Santiago is a challenge, but also an opportunity to enjoy nature, culture and unique experiences.
